Finding the Fool Hen

  • Caps Ridge Trailhead Jefferson Notch Rd Jefferson, NH, 03583 United States (map)

With David Govatski, President of the Friends of Pondicherry

The Harriers’ third trip to the North Country, this time at the tail end of the breeding season,
will again open our eyes wide to the diversity of our state’s bird-life. We’ll look for boreal
species on the Caps Ridge trail, including the Spruce Grouse, one of the more difficult birds to
find in New Hampshire, despite its unwary behavior. Its willingness to be approached, even to
within a few feet, led people to nickname it the “fool hen,” although its camouflage is anything
but foolish! We'll then explore the Pondicherry refuge, home to over 130 species of breeding
birds, where we'll listen for vocalizations of young raptors, begging for food. Pairs of Merlin,
Kestrel, Goshawk, Northern Harrier, Red-tailed, Broad-winged, Sharp-shinned, and Cooper’s
Hawks all have nests here, most tucked away in secretive places! Meet at the Caps Ridge trailhead off Jefferson Notch Rd. at the special time of 7:30 a.m.
